Principle 1: Senior Executives as Role Models (Item 9)
The senior executives' constant role modeling of these Business
Excellence Principles and creation of a supportive environment are necessary
to achieve the organization's potential.
Your senior executives must create and maintain a supportive environment
within which alignment with the 10 Business Excellence Principles can
flourish.
The experience from around the world is that well-intentioned people
at lower levels do not have a chance of success if the CEO is not an
enthusiastic zealot. The lower level people will burn out because their
efforts are a constant battle against impossible odds. The CEO will
undermine (or is the word over-mine) everything they do.
The CEO and senior managers must
- support and be seen to support the 10 Business Excellence Principles
- role model the Principles
- make it easy for people in the company to operate in accordance
with the Principles and not be constantly pulled away by inappropriate
demands
- provide sufficient resources so that the company can improve itself
in line with the Principles
- invest time, money and effort in meeting the needs of all stakeholders
of the company (ie, owners, customers, the company itself, employees,
community and alliance partners)
- give the same kind of emphasis to Business Improvement objectives
and strategies as operational objectives and strategies
- be seen to give importance to improving the company to be more closely
aligned with the Principles
- build the Business Excellence principles as the way the company
does everything they must not be add-ons that are done occasionally
or when conditions are right
Many things can go wrong in the company. There can be many setbacks.
The CEO and senior managers must maintain the focus on alignment with
the Business Excellence Principles despite setbacks and temptations
to take different paths.
