Principle 9: Corporate Citizenship (Item 9)
The organization's action to ensure a clean, safe, fair and prosperous
society enhances the perception of its value to the community.
You should share your knowledge about the Business Excellence Principles
with others to help them prosper. At a very minimum this should be
with your stakeholders: owners, suppliers, customers, employees and
community.
You should share your knowledge of these Principle and Excellent
Business Practice so that other companies competitors or not
should benefit.
The Business Excellence Principles are fundamental to a company's
success. Sharing knowledge about them is a huge contribution to your
community and your industry.
The expectations for `sharing knowledge' is different from the other
four parts of Principle 9 in that there is not yet a community punishment
for those companies that do not do it. The community will think better
of you if you do it, but will not punish those who do not. This is
about improving the general prosperity of your community.
Many believe that Principle 9 also extends to sharing prosperity
with the community. This means that the company should extend its
resources to assist in the community's infrastructure. It would therefore
include:
- Paying taxes so that the infrastructure of the community (on which
everyone in it depends) can grow and further support the community
- Keeping jobs in your country by not establishing manufacturing
off-shore at the expense of jobs in your community
- Helping the less well off members of the community
This good citizenship would include community service by employees.
For example
- employing disabled people
- funding community projects
- childcare facilities for employees
- employees encouraged to participate in voluntary community activities
(eg community associations, emergency services)
- involvement with local schools, involvement with trade and industry
associations
- encouraging and assisting local schools and your trade and industry
associations to adopt practices that are in line with the Business
Excellence Principles.
