Principle 9: Corporate Citizenship (Item 6)
The organization's action to ensure a clean, safe, fair and prosperous
society enhances the perception of its value to the community.
You should use a set of Environmental Performance Indicators (eg,
you should monitor environmental impact at production sites, the average
environmental standard of products and profitability of your most
environmentally sound products).
You need the indicators because what gets measured gets done. If
you do not have Environmental Performance Indicators, you will not
be able to measure if your environmental strategies are having and
effect.
This will help you prove that your environmental work is not only
good for the environment, but is good business.
To make sure that your environmental strategy is implemented throughout
the company and that your environmental work gets results for you,
you should develop a set of Environmental Performance Indicators.
For example, you could monitor
- environmental impact of your production sites
- the average environmental standard of your products
- your energy usage
- your waste
- your paper usage and recycling
- profitability of your most environmentally sound products
Develop a Recycling Value Index to help with decisions about trade-offs
between increased production costs and increased recycling value.
The Recycling Value Index should include the value-added or value-lost
throughout the entire product life cycle at each stage of production,
use, disposal or recovery.
Optimal `recycling value' can then be included as part of your design
process and help decisions to make product recovery a profit center
in a future where product take-back is the norm.
Shareholders. Does this company really consider long term
sustainability? Or, are the profits you see today obtained at the
expense of tomorrow's cash flow?
